Hemmingway Hands

This is just something that's been on my mind, but does anyone have any thoughts as to why Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising make no mention of Dr. Lecter's sixth finger?

I just finished the new book last night and I wouldn't mind hearing outside ideas.
